MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Police in England and Wales have recorded 52,528 hate crimes in 2014/15 — an 18 percent increase compared to the previous year, UK Home Office figures revealed Tuesday.
According to the Home Office Hate crime statistics, 82 percent (42,930) were race hate crimes, 11 percent (5,597) were sexual orientation hate crimes, and the rest were referred to as religious, disability and transgender hate crimes.
According to the combined data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales, some 222,000 hate crimes were registered in the region in the period 2012-2015.
In September, UK police reported that in London alone, the number of hate crimes against Muslims had risen by 70 percent in the last year.
