MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) seeks to liberalize trade between the United States and the European Union, among other parties.
About 600 activists gathered in central Brussels near the EU headquarters, trying to block the venue of the summit, RTL Info news broadcaster said.
"The aim was to prevent the blocking of the entry of European leaders at the summit," Brussels police spokesman Christian De Coninck was quoted by the news outlet as saying.
There were about 30 Spaniards, including four parliamentarians and a minor among the detainees.
The TTIP, negotiated in an unusual secrecy, is considered controversial by its opponents, claiming that the pact would undermine standards and regulations on environmental protection, health and safety, as well as workers’ rights, among other points.
