An unidentified attacker assaulted 11 people with a hammer at a native American government tribal office in British Columbia before being pronounced dead at the scene, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The man attacked one person at the Bridge River Band Office on Wednesday morning and when other people tried to intervene, they were also hit, according to emergency workers cited by CTV.

"RCMP members arrested the male but were unable to transport him as he became unconscious and unresponsive," police said in a news release quoted by CTV on Wednesday.

According to the statement, police officers performed CPR on the attacker, but their efforts failed and he was pronounced dead.

According to the Canadian television network CBC, the BC's Interior Health Authority reported that two of the attacker's 11 victims were left in critical condition and were airlifted to a local hospital; another victim was in serious condition and two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The other six were released.

In Canada, native tribal communities are known as bands or First Nations. Bridge River is a town of about 2,300, and is home to many members of the Bridge River Band, located about nine kilometers (about 5.5 miles) northwest of Lillooet, British Columbia. According to the band's chief Susan James, "Our attention now will be on the healing work we will need to do. This tragedy has put our community into shock."
