In Canada, native tribal communities are known as bands or First Nations. Bridge River is a town of about 2,300, and is home to many members of the Bridge River Band, located about nine kilometers (about 5.5 miles) northwest of Lillooet, British Columbia. According to the band's chief Susan James, "Our attention now will be on the healing work we will need to do. This tragedy has put our community into shock."
