"Foremost among the report’s findings is that in every major region of the world – with the important exception of Europe – people are more likely to want immigration levels in their countries to either stay at the present level or to increase, rather than to decrease," the report "How the World Views Migration" said.
The research showed that at least 52 percent of Europeans polled stood for lower immigration levels in their countries.
The results of the poll are based on interviews with more than 183,000 adults from 140 countries.
In recent months, Europe has faced an enormous and ongoing influx of refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa. According to the EU border agency Frontex, more than 710,000 migrants arrived in the European Union within the first nine months of 2015.
