New York City is prepared to accommodate additional refugees fleeing Syria in the wake of the country's ongoing conflict, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office told Sputnik on Friday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — As a result of the ongoing Syrian civil war, 250,000 Syrians have been killed and more than 11 million forced to leave their homes. About four million of displaced Syrians have fled abroad, triggering an international refugee crisis.

Low US Acceptance of Syrian Refugees - a Failure of Country's Leadership

"The de Blasio Administration welcomes the thousands of Syrian refugees seeking safety and stability," the statement said. "We are prepared to provide necessary support to all refugees who are resettled in our city."

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that at least 78 Syrian refugees have resettled in the New York metropolitan area since October 1, 2014.

De Blasio’s Office added that it is working alongside several US government agencies and non-governmental organizations to provide education and health care to all refugees, regardless of their immigration status.
