Russia and the US differ on Syria in that Washington is fighting President Assad, while Russia is battling Islamic State terrorists, a senior Russian lawmaker wrote Saturday.

“[US President Barack] Obama says that, aside from aerial security, the US and Russia are at loggerheads on Syria. We surely are: the US is out to topple [Syrian President Bashar] Assad while we are targeting ISIL,” the head of the State Duma’s foreign affairs committee Alexei Pushkov wrote on his Twitter account.

President Barack Obama said on Friday that the only area of US understanding with Russia on Syria was on how to prevent accidental clashes between their planes engaged in the conflict, but they differed on “principles and strategies to bring peace.”
