Police in the capital of the former Yugoslav republic of Montenegro used tear gas during anti-government demonstrations, local media reported Sunday.

BELGRADE (Sputnik) – Several thousand activists united in a coalition called the Democratic Front (DF) stepped out on Podgorica late Sunday to renew calls for the resignation of government.

Masked individuals threw flares at police cordons as demonstrators approached the parliament building, prompting officials to use tear gas and disperse the group, according to the Vijesti daily.

Other media reports alleged several people sustained injuries, but the reports have not yet been independently confirmed.

Demonstrators blame Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic for the deteriorating Montenegrin economy and the dispersal of a three-week opposition rally outside the parliament building on Saturday.

The violence comes against the backdrop of suspected excessive use of force during the removal of demonstrators’ tents early Saturday. Speaker Ranko Krivokapic ordered an investigation into the allegations.
