The US airstrike on October 3 killed 22 people at the hospital, including 12 MSF staff and 10 patients. US and Afghan governments opened a probe into what they claim was an accidental bombing.
MSF argued in its petition that, "it is impossible to expect the parties involved in the conflict to carry out independent and impartial investigations of acts in which they themselves are implicated."
"Now that the call to mobilize the IHFFC has been answered, we are calling for the United States and the Obama administration to consent to the IHFFC investigation into the Kunduz hospital bombing, as it must before a truly impartial truth-seeking investigation can be launched," the petition read.
Almost 200 people were inside the Kunduz hospital at the time of the air attack, which continued for about an hour. MSF stressed several times that both Washington and Kabul knew the precise GPS coordinates of the four-year-old health facility.
