MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The commissioner outlined several crucial areas for prevention of radicalization, such as tackling recruitment online, and in prisons.
"Terrorist groups such as ISIL are becoming more and more effective in spreading their poisonous propaganda and attracting new recruits. In fact, we are learning that it now takes only 6 to 8 weeks for extremist groups to radicalise young people and bring them to their cause," Avramopoulos said in a speech, published on the European Commission website.
The Islamic State militant group is massively recruiting followers through social media. According to the International Center for the Study of Radicalization, ISIL has recruited over 20,000 foreign fighters.
