MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Canada’s incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper have decided to step down as leader of the Conservative party following its landslide loss at general elections, the party president John Walsh said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Liberal party led by Justin Trudeau is winning the country’s general election with 185 seats of 170 required and almost 40 percent of votes, according to preliminary results published by the Elections Canada.
"I have spoken to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and he has instructed me to reach out to the newly elected parliamentary caucus to appoint an Interim Leader and to the National Council to implement the leadership selection process pursuant to the Conservative Party of Canada constitution," Walsh said.
