"Speaking about the situation in Syria and Iraq, one needs to say that a joint action of Russia, the United States and the EU are vital to eliminate the threat of ISIL," Forlani told RIA Novosti.
Obviously it would have been much better to eliminate Islamic fundamentalism using political and diplomatic means, but in the current situation with ISIL it's impossible. Right now, there are no other ways to get rid of ISIL except using a military solution.
"How can one in this situation condemn Russia's actions in Syria and the decisions of Vladimir Putin?" Forlani asked.
The real issue right now is ISIL, which threatens to destabilize international stability by creating an Islamic Caliphate. The threat goes far beyond the Middle East, Forlani argued.
That's why key international players, Russia and the United States in the first place, as well as the EU should put aside their differences and coordinate their actions in the fight against the most dangerous common enemy there is — Islamic fundamentalism, the Italian political scientist said.
