CAIRO (Sputnik) — The first vote phase was held on Sunday and Monday, with run-offs scheduled for October 27-28 amid a low turnout. Only 7.27 million out of the 27.42 million eligible voters made it to the polling stations, according to the Election Committee said. Some 700,000 ballots were deemed invalid.
An alliance loyal to incumbent President Abdel Fattah Sisi, called For the Love of Egypt, won 60 party list seats in the parliament. Only four of the 2,584 individual candidates made it into the parliament at the first try.
A total of 596 seats are up for grabs, including 448 individual seats, 120 on party lists and 28 mandates to be selected by President Sisi.
The second round of elections across 14 of Egypt’s 27 governorates will take place on November 22-23, with the final results due in early December. The new parliament is expected to convene the first session by the end of this year.
