MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia will vote for the Cuba-proposed draft resolution demanding that the US economic embargo against it be lifted, Russian parliamentary speaker Valentina Matvienko said Thursday.
The draft will be put to vote at the UN General Assembly on October 27. The United States is expected to oppose the motion.
"Russia will vote for Cuba’s resolution project on lifting sanctions against the country," Matvienko said during a meeting with Ricardo Cabrisas, the vice president of Cuba’s cabinet, known as the Council of Ministers.
Last October, 188 members of the UN General Assembly voted for a resolution calling for an end to the embargo against Cuba, only the United States and Israel voted against the adoption of the resolution.
The United States announced a complete economic blockade of Cuba in 1960 during the Cold War due to differences between Washington and the Soviet-backed communist government in Havana.
