“[Kerry] said they produced ideas… [that] had the possibility to change the dynamic [of the negotiations on Syria],” Toner stated during a press briefing. “The ministers are all agreed to consult with all parties and to meet again soon.”
Toner explained that Kerry, Lavrov, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir and Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirliogu ended their talks on a hopeful note.
“It was constructive. It was productive. There were ideas shared. But he [Kerry] is not going to discuss it,” Toned pointed out.
The foreign ministers, Toner added, hoped to meet again soon to continue their dialogue, possibly as early as October 30.
However, Toner ruled out any approval or request by the US government to invite Iran to join the talks on Syria at present, but did not exclude the possibility of Iranian participation at a later stage.
“Not at this point, but we've always said that Iran at some point needs to be part of the process,” Toner said.
Speaking separately after the talks, Lavrov said Iran and Egypt should also be involved in the negotiating process.
