MOSCOW (Sputnik) The period of cooling in relations between Russian and Western parliamentarians is coming to an end, Russian parliamentary speaker Valentina Matvienko said in an interview with local media published Friday.

"There was a period of some cooling in relations with the parliaments of the Western countries. It looks like it is coming to an end," Matvienko told Argumenty i Fakty newspaper.

According to the speaker, Russian parliamentarians have been meeting and exchanging views with colleagues from European parliaments, including at international forums.

"There is no doubt about an interest on their part in full resumption of cooperation on a bilateral and multilateral basis," Matvienko added.

The speaker noted, however, that the relations with Kiev had not improved despite multiple attempts made by Moscow to resume cooperation.

The relations between Moscow and the West deteriorated over the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014. Western states and Kiev have blamed Russia for its alleged involvement in the military conflict in eastern Ukraine and introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions. Moscow has repeatedly denied the accusations.
