BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — EU member countries are currently ready to take 854 people out of the total 160,000 refugees who have to be relocated according to the decision of the European Council, European Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud said Friday.
“So far, nine member states have notified that they could relocate swiftly 854 persons from Italy and Greece. This is not including the people that have already been relocated, that’s 86 so far all from Italy… The figures are updated fairly regularly,” Bertaud said at a press briefing.
The European Union is currently carrying out two tasks, namely resettling refugees from third countries to the European Union and relocating those who have already entered the bloc to other EU countries according to a quota system.
EU interior ministers approved a European Commission redistribution plan in September to relocate 160,000 asylum seekers throughout the bloc.
