The president of Eurogas noted the importance of creating infrastructure which will bring energy supply into Europe.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — All new investments in energy supply and infrastructure, including from Russia, will benefit European energy security, Eurogas President Gertjan Lankhorst said on Friday.

"In general, I welcome all new investments in pipeline systems for Europe, whether they come from the north, whether they come through Turkey. It is very good to have more possibilities for international trade in gas," Lankhorst said in a Brooking Institute event on the future of European energy.

Lankhorst noted the importance of a secure energy supply by endorsing "all infrastructure that is created to bring more gas to Europe."

In 2014, plans to bring new Russian gas supplies to Europe through the South Stream pipeline were canceled, largely as a result of political decisions. Russia replaced South Stream with Turkish Stream, a Black Sea pipeline with an annual capacity of 63 billion meters.

Eurogas is an association representing the European gas wholesale, retail and distribution sectors. It is comprised of 44 companies and associations from 24 countries, according to the Eurogas’ website.
