MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A majority of the 900 inquiries conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into the homegrown extremist cases are Islamic State (ISIL)-related, CNN reported.
FBI Director James Comey said as quoted by CNN on Friday that FBI investigates hundreds of cases of people coming under ISIL influence and those who try to travel abroad to join ISIL.
The United States is the fourth country in terms of a number of Islamic State supporters on social media following Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iraq, according to the Brookings Institution think tank.
The Islamic State extremist group has seized vast territories across Syria and Iraq, gaining notoriety for its brutal methods, including mass executions. The group’s affiliates also operate in North Africa, Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
