TASHKENT (Sputnik) — Stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan is essential for stability in the countries of Central Asia, Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Yasuhisa Kawamura said Sunday.

"Stability of the situation in Afghanistan is related to the stability of Central Asia as a whole. Japan continues to be involved in resolving this situation, together with the international community, providing humanitarian and technical assistance to Afghanistan," Kawamura told reporters after the meeting between Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The two sides also agreed to intensify cooperation in solving regional problems through dialogue between countries in Central Asia and Japan, Kawamura added.

In recent months, the Afghan government has been facing the resurgent Taliban and the spread of the Islamic State extremists.

The Japanese prime minister is in the middle of his official tour across Central Asian countries — Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The tour is set to end on October 27.
