MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Pevkur will also meet with US Senator Ron Johnson, currently serving as chairman of the subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, as well as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. The politicians are expected to discuss the pan-European refugee crisis and the resultant situation on European borders.
Europe has been beset by an enormous refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing to Europe to escape violence and poverty in their home countries. Over 710,000 migrants arrived in the European Union during the first nine months of 2015, according to Frontex.
In September, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker proposed the redistribution of some 160,000 refugees among EU member states under a compulsory quota system amid an enormous flow of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa. Under the proposal, Estonia must accept 373 refugees.
