It is especially remarkable that Russia managed to produce a major positive change with a limited aerial operation aimed at assisting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his fight against terrorists, the German Internet newspaper added. The operation was launched in late September following a formal request from Damascus.
"Putin's support for the Assad government will determine the fate of all of us. Provided, however, that the Russian president is successful," Die Freie Welt stated.
The hope is that the peace process in Syria could expand to include other regional hot spots and eventually help settle all conflicts in the Middle East. Russia, according to the media outlet, is better positioned to manage this process because Moscow adheres to international law.
"Putin's Russia is committed to international law, while the United States de facto and de jure acts like a wrecking ball," the newspaper asserted, offering post-Cold War era as an example. "It has been a period of regional wars conducted in the US interests, which turned neighboring countries into ruins, forced millions to flee and robbed them of their history and livelihood."
