MOSCOW (Sputnik), Yulia Shamporova – The ongoing migrant crisis could be manageable if the European Union focused on a coordinated response and every member state agreed to take in its share of refugees, the communications officer at the London-based charity Asylum Aid told Sputnik.
"The numbers of refugees entering the EU would be entirely manageable if a serious effort was made to coordinate a response and if every country was willing to take their share," Zoe Gardner said.
Gardner called on the people living in Europe to remember that the refugee were fleeing war, persecution and death, and that they deserved a system which would receive them humanely.
"European countries are capable of providing that welcome, and hopefully European people will start to feel more pride in that fact, as solutions are found and we cooperate better to respond to the crisis," Gardner said.
Some European countries have introduced various measures to deal with the situation, with a number of peripheral states resorting to building border fences, sending military reinforcements and reintroducing frontier controls.
In September, the European Commission announced a quota scheme, providing for the resettlement of 160,000 refugees currently located in Greece, Italy and Hungary, throughout other European member states over the next two years. The plan was opposed by several states, including Hungary.
According to the survey carried out for Sputnik, 62 percent of respondents living in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland oppose taking refugees in while only 26 percent support the idea.
At the same time, those in Western Europe who think their government should not let refugees enter their country amounted to 42 percent, according to the poll.
