The United States faces significant legal issues preventing military action against the Syrian government of Bashar Assad through trained proxies, US Department of State officials told the Senate on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russia has already called into question the legitimacy of the current US military intervention in Syria, which has not been approved by the UN Security Council or the Syrian government.

"It is a very complex legal issue and one that I have been, at least, on the periphery of very considerable discussion," Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs Anne Patterson said.

Patterson made the comment in response to a question whether the Obama administration has the legal authority to open a front against the Assad government as a tool to recruit additional so-called moderate Syrian rebels.

The US head of the coalition against the Islamic State, General John Allen, explained that President Barack Obama has made clear "that it is not his intention to support the moderate Syrians in a go-to-war strategy against Assad."

The Pentagon recently admitted the failure of its half-billion dollar program to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels.
