The official also said that the region’s monasteries are a popular destination for travelers who enjoy educational tours and pilgrimages.
The Leningrad Region’s tourism potential was promoted during the opening of a Visit Russia office in Berlin on October 2. The region’s involvement in the Silver Necklace of Russia project will help attract tourists from Germany, Austria and other European countries, the official said.
Apart from the project, the Leningrad Region also offers such international tourist routes as ViaHanseatika, From Fortress to Fortress, and the Red Route for Chinese tourists.
According to Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko, the region expects to host two million tourists in 2016 and, at least, to double the number of visitors in the next 10 years.
