MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Chilcot Inquiry has been holding hearings since 2009, with the completed report initially expected in late 2014. The delayed publication of the Chilcot Inquiry has led to widespread public and media outcry. The official reason for the delay is the "Maxwellisation" process, giving those named in the report time to prepare for and respond to allegations made in it prior to its release.
"I consider that once National Security checking has been completed it should be possible to agree with you a date for publication in June or July 2016," a letter from Chilcot to UK Prime Minister David Cameron reads.
"Between today and the week of 18 April my colleagues and I will be finalizing our findings, including in light of responses to the Maxwellisation process, and to bring that process to its final conclusion," the letter continues.
The United Kingdom was part of a US-led coalition that invaded Iraq in 2003, without a UN mandate, after falsely accusing former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein of possessing weapons of mass destruction.
