MOSCOW (Sputnik) —International Affairs Committee Chairman Konstantin Kosachev said Friday that reports of civilian casualties as a result of Russian airstrikes in Syria are untrue and show the resistance that Russia's actions are facing in the region.

On Thursday, Russia called the United States Embassy in Moscow to clarify US claims that Russian airstrikes in Syria have caused civilian deaths. The Embassy has not replied.

"These [Russia's] actions, unfortunately, are being resisted, first of all by informational means, when false information is being spread that the Russian military operation in Syria is leading to civilian casualties," Kosachev said at a meeting with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Kosachev claimed that Russia’s political and military actions are focused on the "restoration of law and order in Syria" as well as providing assistance to Syrian President Bashar Assad in tackling violent extremism in the country.

Russian has been conducting airstrikes at the Islamic State jihadist group positions in Syria at the request of President Assad since September 30.

Earlier in October, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riad Haddad confirmed that Russian airstrikes in Syria are only carried out against terrorist targets and have not caused civilian deaths.
