VIENNA (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the talks to end the four-year Syrian civil war started in Vienna with the participation of the top diplomats from the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
“I believe that it is already a certain compromise, a relevant commitment for all the sides to be here tonight and tomorrow. To come here, to accept, to sit together. This is already a very relevant starting point,” Federica Mogherini told journalists on Thursday.
She added that meeting of both regional and international powers around the same table could contribute to finding political solution to the Syrian crisis.
On Friday, officials from nine states, including the United States, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey along with Egypt, Qatar, Lebanon and France are expected to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a political resolution to the Syrian crisis.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with troops loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting on multiple fronts against opposition factions and extremist groups, including the Islamic State.
