UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien plans to travel to Ukraine for a three-day trip next week to meet with government officials in Kiev and assess the humanitarian situation in war-torn eastern provinces, his office said Friday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Ukraine's Donetsk and Lugansk regions have been severely affected by fighting between Ukrainian troops and local anti-government militias, which started in April 2014 when Kiev launched a military operation in Donbass.

"Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O’Brien will visit Ukraine from 2 to 4 November 2015," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement.

The aid chief is scheduled to meet with members of humanitarian and diplomatic communities and people displaced by the one-and-a-half-year conflict in eastern Ukraine.

"He is also expected to visit eastern areas of Ukraine to see firsthand the humanitarian situation of people affected by the crisis," the OCHA statement concluded.

Russia has delivered more than 50,000 tons of humanitarian aid to the conflict-hit territories since August 2014, with the latest supply of mainly foodstuff delivered on Thursday, according to the Russian Emergencies Ministry.
