BAKU (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Azerbaijan held its parliamentary elections. Over 760 candidates representing 15 political parties took part in the elections.
The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan party had 71 out of 125 seats in the previous parliament, which is elected every five years.
During the Sunday elections, the ruling party won enough seats for a majority in the 125-seat parliament, Election Commission's head Mazahir Panahov told a news conference. According to him, the data reflect the results obtained from 91 percent of polling stations in Azerbaijan.
The final results, from all polling stations will be announced later on Monday.
On Sunday, exit polls, conducted both by national and foreign agencies, showed that the ruling Azeri party will win a majority in a new parliament.
