TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — In recent weeks, a wave of clashes between Palestinians and Israeli nationals has claimed dozens of lives. Hebron is located in the disputed West Bank, not far from Jerusalem, which has been at the center of the current outbreak of violence.

The core of the long-lasting Palestinian-Israeli conflict is essentially a struggle over land. Palestinians are seeking recognition of their independent state proclaimed in 1988 on the territories of West Bank, which Israel calls Judea and Samaria Area, as well as East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli government refuses to recognize Palestine as an independent political and diplomatic entity.
The conflict escalated last year when Israel launched a military operation against Hamas forces, which rule Gaza, killing thousands of civilians. In August, the sides agreed to a ceasefire, but civilian clashes between the two communities continue to arise sporadically.

Last week, the Israeli military shot dead a Palestinian who allegedly tried to stab a soldier. The attack also occurred in Hebron and became the eighth such attack in October.
In October, the health charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said amid the resurgence of Israeli-Palestinian violence, an uptake in mental and psychological disorders had been registered in Hebron.
