ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) — The bodies will be identified in St. Petersburg, where the doomed aircraft was bound from the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh in the biggest civil aviation tragedy in Soviet and Russian history.
Over 200 DNA samples have been gathered among victims’ relatives to assist in the identification process.
On Saturday, the Russian Kogalymavia Airbus A-321 passenger airliner, with 217 passengers and seven crew members on board, crashed in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, leaving no survivors.
The Russian Il-76 aircraft, with the bodies of those killed are on board left Cairo on late Sunday, according to the Emergencies Ministry.
