On October 1, the 790-foot cargo ship with a crew of 33 went missing near the Bahamas during Hurricane Joaquin. It was headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico from Jacksonville, Florida.
El Faro’s 28 US crew members and five Polish nationals are all presumed dead.
The Coast Guard said in a statement on October 5 that rescue aircraft searching for survivors from El Faro found a dead body near islands in the Bahamas chain.
