MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Sinai is one of the most troubled provinces of Egypt due to extremist activity. North Sinai is a stronghold of Islamist militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, an Egyptian affiliate of ISIL.
"We issued a NOTAM in December 2014 which provided advise to anyone flying from UK to over Northern Sinai and that remains in place," the source said.
The source refused to comment on the reason behind the NOTAM "for security matters."
A Russian Kogalymavia Airbus A-321 passenger airliner, with 217 passengers and seven crew members on board, crashed in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt on Saturday, leaving no survivors. The cause of the crash has not been revealed yet.
The tragedy has become the biggest civil aviation disaster in Russian and Soviet history.
