MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will meet on Wednesday in Moscow to discuss the political process in Syria, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
"There will be meeting tomorrow in Moscow between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and de Mistura. The main topic will be the political process in Syria and the launch of actual dialogue between Damascus and the Syrian opposition," Zakharova said Tuesday.
Syria has been in a civil war since 2011. Syrian government forces are fighting against opposition factions and extremist groups.
Last week, Lavrov and de Mistura met in Vienna during the two-day talks on Syrian regulation.
According to the communique, representatives of the Syrian government and opposition factions will meet under UN auspices to discuss "credible, inclusive, non-sectarian governance," as well as fair elections and a new constitution. The document also states that the political process in Syria will be led by the people of the country, and they alone must decide its future.
