The memorial in Treptower Park was erected to commemorate 5,000 of the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Berlin in April-May 1945. It is one of three Soviet memorials built in Berlin after the end of the war.
The vandals knocked almost all the letters from a stone table in front of the monument. As a result, the inscription written in Russian and German has become unreadable. The delinquents also destroyed an information booth at the park's entrance.
Local police have launched an investigation into the case.
This isn't the first time Soviet war memorials have been defamed in Germany. In August 2015, a group of vandals stole about 450 bronze plaques from monuments to the Soviet Army in the city of Munster.
