Syria has been in a civil war since 2011. Syrian government forces are fighting against opposition factions and extremist groups.
Last week, Lavrov and de Mistura met in Vienna during the two-day talks on Syrian regulation.
Participants of the talks, including officials from China, Iran, the European Union, and the United States, elucidated a 9-point communique on the Syrian crisis.
According to the communique, representatives of the Syrian government and opposition factions will meet under UN auspices to discuss "credible, inclusive, non-sectarian governance," as well as fair elections and a new constitution. The document also states that the political process in Syria will be led by the people of the country, and they alone must decide its future.
