MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The perpetrator was among those who died in the attack in the capital of the North Sinai governorate. Five civilians and four police officers were injured.
North Sinai is a stronghold of Islamist militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, an Egyptian affiliate of the Islamic State group. Extremist attacks on law enforcement in the volatile region are a near-daily occurrence.
A Russian Kogalymavia Airbus A321 passenger airliner with 217 passengers and seven crew members on board crashed in the Sinai Peninsula not far from Arish on Saturday, leaving no survivors. The cause of the crash has not been revealed yet.
