MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UN Mission in South Sudan will provide assistance to the rescue operation at the crash site of an An-12 cargo plane in South Sudan, Shantal Persaud, a public information officer at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) told Sputnik on Wednesday.
"We [UN Mission in South Sudan] have been requested by the airport to send our people to the crash site, and we will provide assistance," the officer said.
The UNMISS is currently providing personnel assistance such as troops for the recovery and search operation.
She added that "mixed reports on the numbers of those injured and fatalities, and hope to have a clearer understanding of this once our teams are on the ground."
Earlier in the day, a member of the South Sudanese Ministry of Information and Broadcasting told Sputnik that two of the 17 people aboard the plane survived, including a child.
"We can confirm the AN-12 was not a UN aircraft, nor was it engaged by the UN Mission in South Sudan," she added.
