UK Tourists to Rely on Foreign Office Advice for Sharm El-Sheikh
BERLIN (Sputnik) — Germany's Lufthansa Group said Thursday it would halt flights by its Edelweiss and Eurowings subsidiaries to the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

"Due to the current situation on the Sinai peninsula, the Lufthansa Group is suspending commercial flight operations with Sinai as a precaution. The Lufthansa Group will consult on how to proceed in close contact with the authorities," it said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the UK government concluded that the Russian A321 passenger plane, en route from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, might have crashed on October 31 due to a bomb explosion, and suspended all flights to and from the Egyptian city until additional security measures had been taken.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has already criticized London's decision to suspend air traffic, labeling the move premature.

On October 31, an Airbus A321 operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia, crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. All 224 people on board were killed in what has become the largest civil aviation disaster in Russian and Soviet history.

Several major international airlines, specifically, Air France, Flydubai, Lufthansa, Air Arabia and Emirates, have announced decisions to suspend their flights over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula after the crash of the Russian aircraft.
