CAIRO (Sputnik) — The St. Petersburg-bound A321 Airbus came down in the Sinai desert less than half an hour after departing from Sharm el-Sheikh. All 224 people on board, most of them Russian nationals, died in the incident.
"Security measures have always been tough at the airport, but now they have been strengthened," the honorary consul told RIA Novosti.
The consul added that the airport was working as usual, with inward and outbound flights servicing Russia and Europe.
"The only thing airlines have changed is the flight route which now bypasses Sinai," the diplomat noted.
Following the incident, the UK government announced on Wednesday that flights between the United Kingdom and Sharm el-Sheikh would be suspended indefinitely over concerns that the Russian passenger plane might have been brought down by a bomb.
