LONDON (Sputnik) — British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised that every British home will be connected to high speed internet no later than in five years, the UK government portal said Saturday.
"Access to the Internet shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a right – absolutely fundamental to life in 21st century Britain. That is why I’m announcing a giant leap in my digital mission for Britain," Cameron said as quoted by the portal.
The authorities' task will be to provide the population with Internet connection at a speed of at least 10 megabits per second, regardless of geographic location.
Currently, about 83 percent of houses and companies in the United Kingdom have a super-fast Internet connection. According to government plans, this figure will reach 95 percent by 2017.
The details of the program are expected to be revealed next week.
