MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The 227-page report looks at different scenarios of climate change impact that show that "without good development more than 100 million additional people would be living in poverty" by 2030.
Climate impacts will affect agriculture the most, a key sector in the poorest countries and major source of income, food security, nutrition, jobs, livelihoods and export earnings, researchers said.
World Bank Group’s Senior Director for Climate Change John Roome warned that fast action is needed to stop this slide into poverty now.
"We will need to act fast, because as climate impacts increase, so will the difficulty and cost of eradicating poverty," Roome said.
The comprehensive study of climate change risks came out just weeks ahead of a UN climate summit in Paris, from November 30 to December 11, where countries are expected to sign a global agreement.
