MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The United Kingdom must boost spending on scientific research to maintain its reputation as a global science leader, according to a UK House of Commons committee report published Monday.
"The UK is a science superpower. [It] has fallen behind its competitors in terms of total R&D [Research and Development] investment and this will put UK competitiveness, productivity and high-value jobs at risk if it is not reversed," the Science and Technology Committee report said.
The United Kingdom produces 15 percent of the world’s scientific research, while spending 1.7 percent of its GDP on science, according to the report.
The report suggested the country should increase scientific research spending to 3 percent to boost its economy, as well as keep up with global science collaborators, including the United States and Germany.
