MADRID (Sputnik) — The government’s plan was rejected by 123 votes to 107. The center-right government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho was formed on October 22, following national elections held earlier in the month.

A coalition between the Social Democratic Party (PSD) led by Coelho and the Democratic and Social Center – People’s Party (CDS-PP) won the election, securing 104 seats in parliament. However, the opposition Socialist Party (PS), the Communist Party and the Left bloc who had a combined total of 118 seats in parliament later forged a coalition.

After the resignation of the center-right government, the leftist parties are expected to form a new cabinet led by Antonio Costa, the leader of the PS. However, according to Portugal's Constitution, a final decision on whether to appoint Costa prime minister rests with the country’s president, Anibal Cavaco Silva.
