The militsiya (police force) in Russia was established on November 10, 1917 under the official name of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Militsiya. Between March 1919 and July 1923 Felix Dzerzhinsky was Minister of Internal Affairs.

Since 2011, after a series of reforms, the Russian militsiya was renamed to the police force of the Russian Interior Ministry.

Each year, the Special Forces of regional headquarters of the Russian Interior Ministry take tests to obtain the rights to wear maroon berets.

In 2015, Russian policemen carried out a number of serious operations, including maintaining order and security during the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. They also maintained security at several international forums and over 25,000 sports events, including the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Sochi.

The main tests for the right to wear the maroon beret include a 10-km accelerated march, an obstacle course in extreme conditions, preparation for building assault and hand-to-hand combat.

In 2015, the number of killed and wounded in road accidents in Russia dropped by nearly 10 percent, thanks to the Russian Traffic Police. The number of drunk road accidents dropped by 10.5 percent.
