WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — On Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter stated that more US ground forces could be introduced into Syria to support capable local forces in their fight against the Islamic State.
"I suspect this is not the last announcement of US forces on the ground inside Syria and Iraq," Murphy said on Tuesday, adding that it is "not the last escalation."
On October 30, the White House announce it would send up to 50 additional special operations forces to assist the so-called Syrian moderate opposition.
"It defies common sense that we aren’t going to hear an announcement a month or a few months from now that 50 is 100, and then 100 is 200, and then 200 is 300," Murphy said of the likely expansion of US ground forces.
US President Barack Obama publicly rejected the idea of putting US boots on the ground in Syria on numerous occasions in 2013 and 2014.
