MOSCOW (Sputnik), Anastasia Levchenko – Obama formally notified Congress last Friday of his decision to sign the TPP into law if Congress votes in favor of the negotiated deal early next year.
“The TPP’s fate in Congress is uncertain, at best…Now that the text is available for public scrutiny, the reality that it fails to meet Congress’ demands further dims the TPP’s prospects,” Public Citizen Global Trade Watch international program associate Jessa Boehner said.
The agreement’s stated goal is to deregulate trade among 12 Pacific Rim nations, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and others, encompassing 40 percent of the global economy.
Concerns over workers’ rights, employment, copyright issues, sovereignty and the environment have drawn heavy criticism to the TPP from many members of government, as well as labor unions and watchdogs.
