WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United State has authorized an $80-million sale of Hellfire missiles and parts for the United Kingdom, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a release on Tuesday.
"The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the United Kingdom for Hellfire missiles and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $80 million," the release stated.
The Hellfire II is a tactical missile system that can be launched from multiple air, sea and ground platforms.
The United States has been increasing their military spending with similar deals to France and Italy for Hellfire Missiles in recent weeks as part of efforts to boost defenses in Europe.
Previously, the United Kingdom asked the United States to allow a sale of 500 AGM-114R Hellfire II Semi-Active Laster missiles.
"This sale directly contributes to the foreign and national security policies of the United States by enhancing the close air support capability of the UK in support of NATO and other coalition operations," the release noted.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency also said the missiles would contribute to fight by the US-led coalition against the Islamic State.
No specific defense contractor is in charge of the Hellfire missiles sale, according to the release.
