MOSCOW (Sputnik) – “Junk APEC…No to imperialist globalism,” read placards held by demonstrators, who set fires across a road barricaded by security forces. The demonstration, making its way toward the US embassy in Manila, was broadcast by the GMA Network.
The heads of state of the 21 member economies of the APEC, with the exception of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indonesian leader Joko Widodo, are expected in Manila November 18-19 to attend the annual APEC Summit. The economic forum encompasses over 50 percent of the global economy and 40 percent of the world’s population.
The APEC 2015 National Organizing Council has profferred “firm assurances” of robust security measures. Philippines' National Police expanded its forces in the field and ordered the Highway Patrol Group to secure all routes and convoys.
Shop owners and residents were requested to shut windows along main roadways leading from hotels to the event, while other roads in central Manila are planned to be closed.
