According to a spokesperson of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Yemen, Rima Kamal, there are multiple parties involved in the conflict in Yemen, but none of them “showing enough respect to the neutrality of the health facilities.”
“Unfortunately we’ve seen that hospitals are increasingly being used as a way to pressure the other side,” Kamal said in an exclusive interview with Radio Sputnik.
“Generally speaking, health facilities of all kind should never be attacked,” Kamal said during the interview.
Al-Thawra hospital is one of the major health care facilities in the area, where about 50 patients receive medical treatment daily. The report about the shelling came a few weeks after another important hospital run by Doctors Without Borders was bombed by airstrikes of the Saudi-led coalition.
“In this particular case, we are talking about the violation of international humanitarian law, and we are talking about a flagrant violation should this attack be deliberate,” the humanitarian worker said.
“Even if you actually wage war, there have to be minimum rules that all sides who take part in the fighting respect,” she added.According to official data, more than one hundred Yemeni hospitals have been attacked by the Saudi-led alliance since the start of the military operation in March.
